The staffing crisis in the long-term care community is not new…but it is ongoing.  Vaccine mandates, higher pay found in other jobs, and better working conditions elsewhere have further exacerbated the already existing staffing challenges.

Enter technology.

A wise person once said, “The technology you use impresses no one. The experience you create with it is everything.”

Today’s senior care providers are looking to do many things with technology: improve working conditions; allow staff to do more with less; and streamline or potentially eliminate non-care activities.  In other words, they are looking for technology to create an experience that can make a real difference in the lives of staff as well as residents and their families…and, in turn, improve their bottom line.

Controlled Study Proves the Point: Technology is a Game Changer

Leading long-term care provider EmpRes recently conducted a controlled study evaluating the impact of How’s Mom—a powerful communication app—on staff activity. They compared labor costs for family communication in 24 facilities.  12 facilities relied on phone calls to communicate outbreaks or other important facility information to family members.  The other 12 used How’s Mom to automate communication and progress note creation.

The results were staggering…and the benefits really added up.  By implementing How’s Mom, the facilities were able to:

  • cut phone calls with family members by 95%;
  • reduce the time per call from 14 minutes to 4 minutes; and
  • save 55 hours per month per facility in staff time which translated to a financial benefit of nearly $3,000/month per facility.

That kind of time savings means more time spent providing better care, preventing a fall or avoiding a re-hospitalization.   The bottom line: How’s Mom is a game changer.
